BUTOH: FINDING YOURSELF IN YOUR ART

Capstone Project

The Japanese contemporary dance form of butoh centers expression of the self and individual stories, something that doesn’t necessarily get prioritized in other forms of art. Because of this, people very easily lose touch with their own art. My capstone project will not only expand butoh as an art form, but also educate people on what art could grow to be. I hope to inspire others to create however they want to and feel passionate in what they create.
This project will involve me completing a detailed study into butoh, including the history, popular exercises, and improv and choreography techniques, learned through books, interviews and videos. After learning about all of these things, I will have one or two workshops where I gage people’s comfort in their own art through a survey. The workshops will be geared towards anyone interested in learning about a new art form, dancers and theater students looking to explore new methods of storytelling, and anyone who is willing to learn about butoh! With this project, I hope to encourage people, and myself, to create whatever they feel, with a renewed sense of self, and love of art.

Capstone: Welcome
